چکیده

Short-circuit calculations are extremely important in the application and setting of protective relays and the analysis of power system operations. This paper illustrates the calculation of fault currents and voltages during intermediate faults in underground cables, taking into consideration the cable sheath bonding and grounding method. The compensated ground loop impedance for faults along the cable is nonlinear with respect to fault distance when the cable sheaths are cross-bonded and grounded at both cable ends. This makes the application of ground distance relay elements for cable protection complex and undesirable. This paper provides numerical examples of intermediate fault analysis in underground cables to help protection engineers study similar or more advanced power system faults. This paper demonstrates the importance of phase frame of reference calculations in fault analysis, relay settings considerations, and an overall understanding of power system behavior. In addition, this paper shows the comparison of fault calculation results between Mathcad® and an Electromagnetic Transients Program steady-state solution.

Calculation of Underground Cables Frequency- Dependent Parameters Using Full-Wave Modal Analysis

In this paper a new method has been proposed for calculating the frequency-dependent parameters of underground cables. The method uses full-wave formulation for calculating the modal electromagnetic fields and corresponding voltages and currents and then extracting frequency-dependent per-unitlength parameters of underground cables. The proposed method can be used for any cross-sectional shape ...

Prediction of Incipient Faults in Underground Power Cables Utilizing S-Transform and Support Vector Regression

Incipient faults usually emerge from partial discharges which eventually cause insulation degradation between two insulated cable cores. Early detection of incipient faults is of particular importance because insulation defects caused by incipient faults may lead to permanent faults in underground distribution networks. This paper presents a novel approach using S-transform and support vector r...

Re-appraisal of the Basic Impulse Level (BIL) for 400 kV Underground Cables Using EMTP/ATP

This paper investigates the lightning impulse duty for 400 kV underground power cables using EMTP/ATP and re-assesses the recommended design level based on probabilistic analysis. The work is a part of a larger investigation that will study by computer simulation, the full range of transient overvoltages due to lightning, switching, faults and other temporary overvoltages (TOV) on cables within...

Development and Improvement of an Intelligent Cable Monitoring System for Underground Distribution Networks Using Distributed Temperature Sensing

With power systems switching to smart grids, real-time and on-line monitoring technologies for underground distribution power cables have become a priority. Most distribution components have been developed with self-diagnostic sensors to realize self-healing, one of the smart grid functions in a distribution network. Nonetheless, implementing a real-time and on-line monitoring system for underg...

Detection and Risk for Digging Activities around Underground Cables and Pipelines: Implications for Spatial Data Quality

Digging activities are considered the largest cause of damage to underground cables and pipelines. Contractors can reduce the risk through detection, which will cost time and thus money. In the Netherlands, maps are the prime source of information on the location of cables/pipelines and detection time strongly depends on whether maps indicate the presence of cables and pipelines. Poor quality m...
